Every quotation you receive will carry a GSM figure, and most buyers treat it as a quality score: higher is better, lower is cheap. That is not what it measures, and the misreading costs money in both directions — buyers overpay for weight they do not need, or reject a fabric that was right for the garment.
What the number is
GSM is grams per square metre. Take a one-metre square of the fabric, weigh it, and you have the figure. That is the whole definition. It is one line of a spec sheet — the rest of what goes into sourcing a garment sits around it.
It tells you how much material is present. It does not tell you how good that material is. A 200 GSM tee knitted from coarse carded yarn will feel worse and last less time than a 160 GSM tee in fine combed cotton, because yarn quality, knit construction and finishing all sit outside what GSM measures.
Two things determine whether a fabric is good, and GSM is neither of them:
Yarn quality. Combed cotton has had the short fibres mechanically removed, which is why it feels smoother and pills less. Carded cotton has not. The difference is obvious by the tenth wash and invisible on day one — which is precisely why cheap suppliers quote GSM loudly and yarn type quietly.
Finishing. Bio-washing, compacting and pre-shrinking determine how the garment behaves after laundering. An uncompacted fabric will shrink in the wash, and no amount of GSM fixes that.
So when a supplier leads with GSM and goes quiet about yarn count and finishing, you are being sold the easy number.
What weight to actually pick
120–150 GSM. Light. Correct for performance and sportswear in polyester, and for summer-weight women’s styles. In cotton this is thin enough that a dark garment can look acceptable and a white one will not — light shows through. Avoid for anything print-led.
150–180 GSM. The global default for a standard cotton tee. Promotional shirts, event tees, and most retail basics sit here. Comfortable in warm climates, cheap to ship, takes a screen print cleanly.
180–220 GSM. The retail sweet spot. Heavy enough to hang rather than cling, opaque in white, and durable through repeated commercial laundering. This is where most branded blanks and corporate polos sit, and where we would point a buyer who is unsure.
220–260 GSM. Streetwear and premium weight. Necessary for oversized and drop-shoulder blocks, because a boxy pattern in light fabric just looks like a shirt that does not fit. Also where heavyweight “premium tee” positioning lives.
280–380 GSM. Fleece territory — hoodies, crewnecks and sweatshirts. Below 280 a hoodie feels flimsy; above 380 it gets expensive to ship and hot to wear outside genuinely cold markets.
Where buyers go wrong
Buying weight for markets that do not want it. A 240 GSM tee sold into a hot, humid market is a garment that sits on the shelf. Weight signals quality in northern Europe and looks like a mistake in Chennai or Lagos.
Forgetting freight. GSM is weight, and weight is money in a container. Moving a 10,000-piece order from 180 to 220 GSM adds roughly 20% to the fabric weight of the shipment. On sea freight that is often absorbable. On air freight it is not.
Comparing quotes at different weights. If one supplier quotes 180 GSM and another 160 GSM, the second is not cheaper — it is a different garment. Always normalise the spec before comparing price. This is the single most common way buyers get a “great price” that turns out not to be.
Assuming GSM is exact. Knitted fabric has natural variation, and a ±5% tolerance is normal and accepted across the industry. A supplier who promises exactly 200 GSM with no tolerance is either inexperienced or not being straight with you.
The question to ask instead
Rather than “what GSM is it”, ask a supplier: what yarn count, combed or carded, what knit construction, and is it compacted?
Anyone who can answer that fluently is talking about fabric they had made. Anyone who cannot is quoting a number off a supplier’s price list — which is one of the things worth checking before you place an order.
